What You Need to Know About Blanketing Your Horse

Blanketing your horse isn’t one-size-fits-all. While many horses handle winter just fine on their own, others need protection depending on weather, coat condition, and daily routine.

Types of Horse Blankets

  • Sheet: Lightweight, for mild weather or layering

  • Lightweight: Cool temps (fall/spring)

  • Midweight: Standard winter use

  • Heavyweight: Extreme cold or clipped horses

Understanding Blanket Weights

Blanket weight refers to the amount of insulation inside the blanket.

  • 0g = no insulation (sheet)

  • 100–200g = light insulation

  • 200–300g = moderate warmth

  • 300g+ = heavy insulation

Daily Blanket Care

  • Remove blankets daily when possible

  • Check for rubbing at shoulders and withers

  • Adjust layers based on temperature

  • Keep blankets clean and dry

Keep your blankets clean, repaired, and ready before the season hits.
